I originally started Lo-Fi Saint Louis to feature videos of bands that play stripped down rock n roll. But over time it's grown beyond that a bit. But to me lo-fi is at it's core, an attitude of simplicity. Simple is beautiful no mater how you achieve it. And ironically often the simple things can be some of the most complicatedly beautiful things there are.
Simple is wonderful. I'm not sure about you, but my lofi hero is Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel. He really exemplifies the complicated beauty of simplicity. In every way.
For what it's worth, "lo-fi," for me, is more of an approach to the world, like Bill said. I view it as a way of getting to the point. It's so easy to cloak a load of crap in pretty colors and fabrics and pretend it matters. It's still a crock of shit. A "lo-fi" approach (and I do view it on a bigger level than just music) forces one (a person, a musician, an artist, a writer, a cook, a politician, a carpenter, a cop, whatever) to be REAL.
All of the above! Synonymous with lowbrow, DIY, outside of the mainstream, real, unpretentious, gritty, independent, underground, etc... but that doesn't just apply to music or media. It can apply to all aspects of culture or life in general. That's the way I've always thought of it, or at least how I believe it applies to this site (as well as my old Lowlife Guide to St. Louis... anyone remember that?).
If I were to think of a "lo-fi hero" in St. Louis, I think it would have to be Bob Reuter. From his radio show, to his photography, to his music, and to just the (often) reckless way he lives his life... he exemplifies lo-fi.
I'm not lo-fi. But I came here per an invitation so I'm checking things out. Stripped-down rock and roll is not my thing, honestly. I'm more into an electronic sound, be it from real synthesizers, software synths, or, my Commodore 64 or Atari 2600 (that I just retro-fitted with a MIDI interface). I mix technology and music. I suppose the output from my SID6581 is technically lo-fi... it's 8-bit.
Sounds pretty lo-fi to me. I mean, if you read through the posts above, we're all pretty much agreeing that lo-fi can mean many different things, not strictly pertaining to "stripped-down rock and roll."
True... I'm glad you see it that way. I just wanted to point out that I'm into making electronic music, which can end up feeling a little out of place in STL at times.
Digital is far cheaper, yes. It makes the DIY part of making music far more doable for people on a low budget like myself, i.e. I like having 3 rooms worth of simulated equipment at my disposal within arm's reach. But I seize every opportunity to get my hands on some more knobs and buttons... it's just more fun.
