THE CIRCUIT by LO-FI SAINT LOUIS

Watching that video on preparing St. Louis-style ribs made me wonder what everyone's favorite BBQ joint is in St. Louis... Ya know, the ones that specialize in the stuff. Here are some (all of these may not be open any more... not sure since it's been years since I've checked some of them out): Phil's, Mama's Coal Pot, C & K, Big Jake's, Granddaddy's, Hayden's Country Bar-B-Que, Iowa Buffet, KT's Smokehouse, Michon's, Ms. Piggies, Penny's BBQ House, Smokemaster's Bar-B-Que & Fish, Smokin' Al's BBQ, Sweet Jo Mama's Barbecue, T.G. Hudson's Open Pit BBQ, Porky's Backyard BBQ, Bandana's?

The best BBQ I've ever had anywhere would have to be the nameless tax free enterprises that open up on street corners and in defunct parking lots on the north side of St. Louis during the summer months. Nothing beats a $5.00 bbq'd pork steak sammich from over by Newstead and MLK!

C&K does NOT fuck around...soooo delicious. The rib tips are scrumptious. It's not hard to get to either...just shoot straight up Skinker/McCausland into Pine Lawn (McCausland/Skinker turns into Kienlen and then into Jennings Station Rd).

Big Jake's used to be good also, but I believe they're gone.

Wasn't impressed at all with Phil's or Smokin' Al's. Bandana's was horrible. The Call Box on Loughborough was okay...a decent option when I don't want to wander more than a couple blocks. But I haven't been back in quite awhile so who knows whether they're better or worse now.

2 places I've wanted to try but haven't yet are Mama's Coal Pot and Smoki-O's.

PS - Gates was good, but I think all the hype killed it for me...it just didn't stand up to it. The burnt ends were dandy, though.

I reccomend you guys check out Red's BBQ. It's not a restaurant, it's more of a stand located on Bermuda, off of Hwy 70 in Fergusson. He's only open like three days out of the week but you always know because the parking lot is just packed.

For many years this was true of Redman Harris, as he carted his mobile barbecue unit up and down Chambers Road. But Red the Bar-B-Que Man has a permanent stand—at the end of a residential strip in Ferguson. You can't miss it. It's red. And it looks like it's on fire. The guys at the five grills would sooner toss you on one of 'em than reveal the recipe for Red's vinegar-spiked sauce. (To be sure, it brings on a slow eye-watering, but the Red Man's meat tastes just as good when gobbled dry.) The stand's open Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. till midnight.

I've heard of Red's before, and almost went there once, but I understand there's a lot of standing around and waiting involved in going there.

I know this is about stl bbq, but I gotta say I make special trips to Memphis and KC to get my fix. And you know what, the best BBQ is always in the ghetto. The best Mexican food I've EVER had, is down on Cherokee, I will brave north city for some good bbq, but I still haven't heard of any place legendary enough to make the trip.

I'll admit I haven't tried too many stl bbq places, mainly because I haven't heard of them. If someone knows of a good, smokey, joint with smoke stained walls, and a worn counter top lemme know. They always have the best bbq.

Supersmokers is okay, but c'mon people it's a freakin' chain!!! I'll take Rendezvous or Arthur Bryants over Supersmokers any day, the foods way better, but the atmosphere is what makes it worth the trip.

I don't care if it's a chain or not. If it's good, it's good. And btw, Super Smoker's isn't technically a chain anymore since there's only one location now.

Ahhh, somehow I overlooked the call-outs to the n. city joints. My apologies. I thought Sweetie Pie's was more of a cafeteria style soul-food joint than strictly bbq, but if it's good I'll give it a go. C&K looks promising, looking forward to it. thanks.
