THE CIRCUIT by LO-FI SAINT LOUIS

Watching that video on preparing St. Louis-style ribs made me wonder what everyone's favorite BBQ joint is in St. Louis... Ya know, the ones that specialize in the stuff. Here are some (all of these may not be open any more... not sure since it's been years since I've checked some of them out): Phil's, Mama's Coal Pot, C & K, Big Jake's, Granddaddy's, Hayden's Country Bar-B-Que, Iowa Buffet, KT's Smokehouse, Michon's, Ms. Piggies, Penny's BBQ House, Smokemaster's Bar-B-Que & Fish, Smokin' Al's BBQ, Sweet Jo Mama's Barbecue, T.G. Hudson's Open Pit BBQ, Porky's Backyard BBQ, Bandana's?

I linked to an article earlier in this thread that reviewed some of the best barbecue joints in St. Louis (including' Mama's), but that was when everyone was yammerin' on and on about KC and I guess no one bothered to read it. Here's the review:

Mama's Coal Pot, 6655 Delmar, St. Louis. (314) 727-8034 If you like a little soul in your barbecue then this is the place to be. Mama's is a little hut that is tucked in the corner of an open air market down on the Loop. It sits right next to Bob's seafood, which makes for an interesting combination of smells in the summertime. Mama's has good hickory-smoked pork steaks and ribs sauced up with soul. You can even get pig snouts if you are so inclined. Make sure you try the buttermilk pie for desert. Think of it as pound cake soaked in milk. Eggs, butter, flour, sugar, a pinch of vanilla, nutmeg, and of course buttermilk. Soul food, Southern-style right here in the Lou.

IMO, super smokers was awful... Bandanas has some of the best 'pulled' pork around [it's chunked..]
But my all time favorite has to be St. Louis Q 'Best Q in the Lou'
Take hwy 70 west from the city to the Goodfellow exit. Hang a right and shoot down goodfellow to West Florrisant. It's on the left side of the road, right before W. Flo. KILLER ribs, snoots, 'white meat' [tripe] and all the rest

Might be just where I grew up, but I remember Barney's BBQ way out in West County was my favorite for a long time. That BBQ shack has stood for the better part of 60 years and still uses the wood oven to cook in their original screen porch restaurant. Maybe it was just the atmosphere, and maybe that why I'm a vegetarian now.

Went to a small place called "De's Best" located on Union and MLK. Meat was decent, sauce was too sweet. I had a rib tip plate w/2 sides. The sides were typical store bought potato salad, and decent bbq beans. Some of the tips were tender, and some too chewy, but good flavor without sauce, and decent with a tiny bit of sauce on them.

Then Last weekend, went to 17th st Bar &Grill in O'Fallon Illinois. It took over the old Super Smokers store. Had a 3 meat dinner, w/ 2 sides. Brisket, chpped pork, Pork ribs. The brisket was slightly dry and not alot of smoke taste. The Ribs were a little smokier, had a good bark, but still kinda bland. The chopped pork was decent, but was chopped real fine, which would have been fine for a sandwich. The sauces were good. The 2 sides were excellent, Creamed Corn and Mac and Cheese. The corn was actually creamed, not anything like canned stuff, it had a white cream sauce with maybe a hint of cheese, and the Mac and Cheese was creamy and tasty.

But honestly, I wont be going back to either one, so the search continues.

We checked out the new barbecue place on Olive Friday night and were really impressed. It's probably the best barbecue I've had locally in quite some time! The place is called Pappy's Smokehouse and they serve it up Memphis-style. Unfortunately they were out of ribs but I really enjoyed the Pulled Pork Platter I got, and their sauce selection is excellent. The owner was very friendly, chatting with us about the business and his plans for booking some local blues musicians in the future (I recommended Marquise Knox). He also brought out their "Fire" sauce from behind the counter for me to sample (too hot to keep out on the tables, he says), which was awesome, but I actually preferred their Pappy's Original sauce they had on the table, while the wife and kid dug the Sweet Baby Jane's, which had a nice smoky flavor. They're still operating at odd hours (i.e., they close at 5pm on Saturdays) until they get their regular routine down (they've only been open for a month), but I can see that this place will be a regular place for us to dine on some great BBQ in the future. Check 'em out when you get the chance!
