Trouble in River City

New Microbreweries on Cherokee?

OK, I've heard that there are three microbreweries opening along Cherokee in south city. Besides Foam (coming later this year, supposedly), what are the other two? Anyone know?

Are you talking brew pubs or actual bottling facilities?
"Microbreweries"... that's all I know.
I can tell you a little bit about them. I'm opening a craft brewery/coffee house on Cherokee at Jefferson. It's gonna be called Foam. We are currently renovating the building. Hoping to be open by the end of August. I have a brewer from Granite City named Dave Degonia who'll be brewing beer in the building. We'll be the smallest of the 3 by far. I think he's looking at a 40 gallon system. I think we'll be more experimental than the others based on the size of our system. I went through the Stable Microbrewery (not sure if that'll be the name) that's at Lemp and Cherokee. From what I understand it's a couple of guys that started with Schlafly and are calling themselves Amalgamated Brewing. It's gonna be an amazing space. They're also going to be distilling whiskey and liqueurs on site. The other one I know of is Mattingly Brothers, but it's not on Cherokee. They're on Jefferson a couple of blocks north of Cherokee, but in the same general area. Don't know much about them at all.
Wow, this is great news! Mike, are Foam and the others in the 20th Ward? Have you had to work with Craig Schmid on the whole "sale of liquor" issue and did you have to prove that you'd have 50% sales of food per the ordinance? Just curious if you have or if this has changed recently...
That's right. The group of guys who are opening Amalgamated are opening in the stables on the East side of Lemp at Cherokee. The place will be called The Stable. One of the chief operators was the first bartender at the Schlafly Tap Room. He is also involved with some guys who opened the Rotten Apple up in Grafton, Illinois.
The others include a brewer from Helsinki who has taught beer classes in St. Louis and lives here; and a chemist who has been distilling in his garage for 20 years and makes the best absinthe I've ever had.
I recently had some of their first two batches of rum and was thoroughly impressed, though I don't drink much rum. I got to check the place out a couple times in the past several months and can say that the space is beautiful.
They're looking to open sometime in May and will offer beer, liquor and some food.
